People Parkers - Parking People in Public Space since 2015

What's a Parklet?

Born in San Francisco in 2010, the idea of parklets is simple: turn car parks into ‘parks’ for people, encourage community interaction, provide people focused amenity, support cultural expression and increase local business capacity.

Parklets can be used for tactical urbanism, community engagement, outdoor dining, road closures and temporary interventions to encourage long term change. Parklets make people think about public space differently.

People Parkers Origins

Our first foray into alternative uses of car spaces came in 2016 when we received funding from the City of Sydney Council to conduct the 'Glebe Point Road Moveable Parklet Program'. This program was run in conjunction with the Glebe Chamber of Commerce and showed the effectiveness of parklets on an urban high street.

The first phase of this partnership utilised an existing mobile shipping container asset placed in 3 locations over 6 months. The positive results of this initial study can be seen in the below report.

The second phase of the Glebe Moveable Parklet Program involved crowdfunding the development of an innovative trailer parklet design by local architects Alexander Symes & Branko Jaric. 33 local residents, community organisations and businesses ensured the project was successfully funded and 2 prototypes trailers made their way onto Glebe streets.

ABC Gardening Australia’s Costa Georgiadis helped launch the new design in October 2015 at the headquarters of major sponsor Sydney City Toyota. The design built on the findings of the 1st parklet trial along Glebe Point Road in 2015/16 reducing red tape, increasing mobility and utilising private funding streams to prove financial demand for parklets in front of businesses.

The Mobile Parklet

At People Parkers, we have developed a Parklet on wheels which can be taken to any location quickly and easily. It’s mobility and ability to be registered anywhere reduces red tape and provides amenity to businesses and the public in a cost affordable manner.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMTN: As a community engagement tool, the Mobile Parklet comes into it’s own. It’s versatility provides councils and activation organisations to test the viability and community uptake for more permanent extensions to public space.

OUTDOOR DINING: As an extension of outdoor dining the Mobile Parklet is a no brainer; 2 extra tables and 10 extra chairs or parking for 1 vehicle out the front of a hospitality business. Through our pre and post service consultation process, the results have spoken for themselves.

EVENTS: The ability to easily bump our parklets in and out along with their attention grabbing nature has seen us work with major festivals and arts organisations across NSW & QLD. The mobile parklets can adjust to an incline, are secured with stabilisers, wheel chocks and braking systems and are the perfect width of a street if you need a functional way to mark the entry to your road closure event.
